Azzuri Stymied By Serie A Foreigners?

August 21st, 2010

It has often been stated that one of the main problems England face is that the Premier League is populated by so many foreign players that this hinders the progress of England’s top stars and in particular the youngsters, in the Premier League. But that same argument could equally be given for Italian football’s current lack of talented superstars.

The Azzuri have failed to impress lately. The 2010 World Cup finals were hardly impressive for the Azzuri, with an equilizer in Ireland the only element that pushed them into the finals. At the finals, the Italians also failed to impress, especially in their first two games against Paraguay and New Zealand.

Italy was hurt by their lack of ingenuity in attack, despite their renowned defensive abilities. They missed the guile of Andrea Pirlo, they missed the threat of a player of the calibre of Francesco Totti and an in form Luca Toni and what is more, they may well struggle to find adequate long term replacements for all these players to put in the latest soccer jersey. Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan were the Serie A and Coppa Italia winners of 2010 before they went on to lift the European Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Madrid. However despite this glorious season, Inter did not contribute a single player to the Italian World Cup squad. For most of the season, Inter’s first team barely contained an Italian player. Only youngsters Davide Santon and Mario Balotelli made a lasting contribution and they were used mainly from the substitutes bench and neither made the final squad for the summer’s showpiece event in South Africa.

If we look to the rest of Serie A, it becomes apparent that the giants of the league are facing the same conundrum. AC Milan can be commended for a higher amount of Italians in their first team, but this victory is diminished by the fact that most of these people are nearing or beyond thirty. It’s a slightly rosier picture at Juventus, but only just thanks to the likes of Chiellini, Giovinco and De Ceglie coming through the ranks to supplement the impressive Marchisio in midfield. A large amount of Juventus Italian nationals, and especially those that are first team caliber, are all above thirty.

In recent times, players on the Italian national team are less likely to come from the top few teams in Serie A, and players are instead being chosen from the groups which rank just below this group. The Italian World Cup team has, at present, 6 players hailing from Juventus, with three under the age of thirty, 3 from Milan, one from Roma, but also has 3 from Napoli, two from Genoa, two coming from Sampdoria, 2 from Fiorentina, and one each who come from Bari, Cagliari and Udinese.  There is also a player from Al Ahli of the UAE (Fabio Cannavaro).

The trend is not stopping anytime soon, thanks to the ages of top players this may become a worry for both Azzuri managers and the Italian FA alike. A number of these Italian players are not currently participating in the Champions League every season, a wounding phenomenon that will fiercely impact performance abilities when such players are on the pitch.

Italy’s future is not totally dismal, with such players like Salvatore Bocchetti, Leonardo Bonucci, Domenico Criscito, and Giampaolo Pazzini rising through the order, however, these players will be receiving an education in soccer from places like Lazio, Palermo, Bari, and Cagliari rather than Nou Camp, Old Trafford, Allianz Arena, or Bernebeu.

It is a worrying trend for the Italian national side and one that needs to be addressed. Can the heroes of a country really be considered heroes if they don’t have their hearts in a national cause?

Interest In Soccer For Kids

August 19th, 2010

Soccer is a team sport that is an excellent addition to a child’s life, so it’s great when your son or daughter says they want to play. This means that they will be embarking on a new adventure that will teach them all kinds of wonderful skills they will use throughout the rest of their life. So many things can be learned from joining in on team sports, like strategy, working together with others toward a common goal, organization and how to create lasting friendships.

Encouraging your child to have fun and continue with the sport even when things get a bit rough is part of a parent’s job, so here are some tips on how to keep things fun and interesting for them. A great deal of their experience with soccer or any other sport will have to do with you, so you want to make sure that you are there to be supportive without going to the extreme of being overbearing. Pay attention to how they are acting; be ready to step back and allow them to attend practices without you if you notice that your presence is distracting them. Chances are you’ll still get your bonding time with them when they want to tell you all about what happened at practice afterwards.

Also, be sure to keep a level head about the game as well as their performance in it. Letting your child or their friends see you yelling and swearing at a ref or at the team in general for a bad play will not help anybody.

Probably the most important thing that a parent, coach, or any other adult involved with the game experience can do is to make sure that all corrections or advice given to the child to help their game is done in a positive manner. When you are practicing with them, try to choose more drills that have something to do with handling the ball over running laps or anything like that. If they don’t seem to be doing a move properly, the best thing to do is take them aside and demonstrate how it’s done, maybe explain to them why it’s done that way and so on.

If your son or daughter is not kicking, trapping or heading the ball properly, the best thing to do is show them the proper techniques during the next practice, or practice it with them on their own. Kids generally learn pretty fast, so focus on teaching rather harsh public corrections.
