While Chelsea’s team is packed with skill all across the field there are a few key players that make the team perform at the level they do. Without these players Chelsea just wouldn’t be on the same level.
1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)
Terry sets the benchmark with which the other players adhere to, captaining both club and country. Willing to defend by any means necessary with skill and bravery, what often gets lost in the plaudits given to Terry is that he is a very technically sound defender. Not afraid to lead by example and always managers to be a danger for teams set pieces, he is a fine example of a strong team leader and an outstanding choice as captain of the club and his country.
2. ASHLEY COLE (England, Left back)
Every time he lines up against the Gunners he may be booed openly by Arsenal fans, despite the criticism Ashley Cole is still considered by many to be the best left back in the world. His form and confidence has not been consistently great, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. In games against him the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been kept relatively quiet. That’s no fluke, not many other left backs could do the job.
3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)
Injury robbed Chelsea of Essien for a large chunk of last season and his absence was keenly felt, even in a midfield that boasts so many outstanding, world class players. Essien gives the midfield wonderful balance. He is a technically gifted soccer player with a great work rate and defensive skill. He gets forward at the right time along with a powerful and accurate kicking game from a distance. His role within the team defiantly makes the 24.4 million pounds it cost to transfer him seem like a bargin.
4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)
Who wouldn’t want a player like Lampard in the midifled scoring handfuls of goals. This season he has been deployed in a slightly deeper role under Carlo Ancelotti and the result has been a marked return to form for the midfielder and the goals are once again going in. His willingness to join the attack along with his ability to link with other players in the team make him dangerous up the front.
5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)
Considered by many to be the best striker in the world at the moment, and its hard to argue the point considering his current form. Didier Drogba wearing the 09/10 Chelsea jersey makes all defenders fear the upcoming game. He may argue with officials and opposing players and fall over at the slightest touch but at times he can be unstoppable. An excellent sense of presence coupled with prestigious goal scoring skill make him a must have for the team. His skill may give Chelsea what they need to end Manchester United’s recent dominance of the Premier League.
